Christmas surely a time for caring .. and sharing

NEWS

Two of inner-Brisbane’s most respected organisations that help others in need have come up with quite different but excellent ways you can help someone less fortunate this Christmas. One suits those with a little bit of spare cash to help others; the other asks simply that you support a garage sale with household items you no longer need.

Brisbane Youth Service, the organisation in Berwick Street Valley that serves the needs of troubled youth f has instigated a “Cracker of a Xmas” campaign where people can “become the ultimate gift giver and give a young homeless person a cracker of a Christmas”.
With many young disadvantaged people without a family to go to for Xmas, BYS is out to make it as special as possible – not just for them but for those who’d like to lend a helping hand. People are being asked to go onto the service’s website – wwwbrisyouth.org – and simply select an item to help youth in need.
The choices are gift vouchers of varying amounts ranging from:
• $30 for a Xmas present
• $60 to provide one night off the street for a single person
• $120 – one night off the street for a couple or family • $500 – Towards getting someone ready for work
• $1000 – A home set Up Kit.
People who help in this way to give someone a cracker of a Xmas will receive a tax deduction receipt, and a painting print, along with a certificate of thanks from the BYS. This can then be given to a loved one with their name on it.
Way down Brunswick Street towards the river, the New Farm Neighbourhood Centre is holding a suburb-wide giant garage sale from 7am to noon on Saturday 10 December. To register, email giantgaragesales@gmail.com or simply donate items on the day to the NFNC’s kerbside sale.
It’s a fantastic way to sell unwanted goods and thus limit land fill before upcoming kerbside collections. And 25 per cent of all sales goes to the centre for its ongoing good works in the community. After the giant sales, a sausage sizzle will take place at the centre from 12.30pm on the Saturday.
